Abstract

Sixteen castrated males were used, submitted to four treatments with different levels of ground corn ears (GCE), being: ration with 2% and 5%, 19% and 21%, 35% and 37% and 35% and 37% (+ 2.5% soybean oil) of GCE for the growing and finishing phases, respectively. The animals were allotted in a complete randomized blocks, with four treatments and four replicates per treatment. In the growing phase, it was observed that the swine fed with diet containing 35% GCE presented a smaller daily weight gain. In relation to the carcass characteristics it was not observed a significative difference in dressing percentage, carcass length, ham percentage and loin eye area, however, significative difference (P<0.05) were verified in the backfat thickness (BT). The animals feeding diet with high fiber levels presented a smaller BT in relation to the other treatments. The use of the GCE can be recommended in swine diets in the growing-finishing phases to the level of 19% of the diet.
